When Himself was released in August 1971 it reached number 5 and stayed in the UK album charts for 86 weeks. An ambitious, thoughtful, varied and intensely musical record, it’s not hard to hear why the Melody Maker’s Michael Watts called Gilbert, “the only genuinely interesting and original new talent to appear in the Britain in the seventies.”

Released here in its original sleeve design along with a 20 page full colour booklet with new sleevenotes, rare photos and memorabilia. Also includes 8 bonus tracks including singles, b sides and Gilbert’s remarkable two early demos.

Reviews:

`At his best, he is the missing link between the Kinks and Squeeze.’ Guardian online

The man is currently enjoying the single most overdue reappraisal in the history of recorded music.  Melodically it’s `White Album’ -era McCartney at the pinnacle of his game; lyrically it’s Alan Bennett displaying an unmatched daring with scansion’ 5 stars Record Collector

`…the social chronicler link between Ray Davies and Chris Difford’ Uncut 4 stars

`an industrious geyser of quirkily idiosyncratic songwriting …it was us that went away, not him. It’s unthinkable that we should need reminding of the man’s singular talent …sung by one of the great open and unaffected pop voices. So many riches that it’s a sodding outrage’ Shindig
