The Very Best Of (CD / Download)

Format: CD
Cat. No.: SALVOVCD05
Barcode: 698458940520
Playing Time:

Sandie Shaw’s endearing and instantly recognisable voice and girl next door appeal married to the suburban Sixties in a nutshell songs of Chris Andrews made her a huge star with a golden run of hits. They’re all present on this new selection made by Sandie herself along with the very best of her remarkable 80s recordings with The Smiths, a radical reworking of her Eurovision - winning Puppet On A String and a choice selection of album tracks and B sides. Also includes a new essay on Sandie by Bob Stanley of St Etienne.

REVIEWS

"(...) Sandie Shaw’s career has been both enduring and quirky. This collection demonstrates with amplitude. After (There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me, the insane Puppet On a String and the insaner Monsieur Dupont, there’s a huge ’70’s gap until she charges back in, contemporary as you like, with a fine version of Anyone Who Had a Heart. Even The Jesus and Mary Chain gave her the excellent Cool About You. No Cilla or Lulu, there has never been
anyone quite like Sandie Shaw."

Q

"One of Britain’s formidable quintet of 1960s female vocalists, Sandie Shaw continues to command a considerable following, and ahead of releasing expanded new editions of six of her albums, Salvo has indulged in this interesting cherry-picking exercise. All three of Shaw’s number ones (Always Something There to Remind Me, Long Live Love and Puppet on a String) are here."

Music Week

"When the British public were given a choice of five songs for her to sing at the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, they only went and chose Puppet on a String, the only one she hated. And apparently, she still dislikes it to this day, which is why it’s been relegated to a lowly track 15 on this lovingly collated new collection. No matter, as that gives us the chance to enjoy classic singles like Girl Don’t Come and the title track, a UK number-one hit, as well as some of  her later material - the collaborations with The Smiths and British Electric Foundation on Hand in Glove and Anyone Who Had a Heart, respectively. You can’t help thinking that this is the greatest-hits collection Sandie Shaw wants us to hear."

Classic Pop

"The barefoot Sandie Shaw was an essential part of the swinging 60s, a pioneer for women in pop. Alongside a reissue series for her album, this is a great compilation of her finest moments, from Always Something There to Remind Me, though Eurovision glory with Puppet on a String and on to her return to the limelight with the help of fans like the BEF and the Smiths."
