There came a time during the ‘60s when most female artistes reached a crossroads,
following their initial impact and early success, at which they had to consider new directions so that they might prolong their professional careers. After two incredibly successful years, six major hit singles and two albums, although she had only just turned twenty, that point arrived for Sandie Shaw in l967.
Despite the fact that acts like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who had broken
new ground with their own compositions and cracked the U.S. market, the one tried and
tested future for a so called “popette” was still considered to be the clubs and cabaret
circuit in the U.K.
For “The Mod’s Madonna” this was a real dilemma. Already the biggest-selling female singer of her generation, she empathised with the kids and they shared her intuitive belief that, as Dylan had written some years before: the times they were a-changing. Which is why initially Sandie really didn’t want to enter the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest, which she considered pretty uncool and which of course she won in a landslide with the contagious Puppet On A String. Almost inevitably Puppet went to number one in the Spring of 1967, which meant Sandie’s profile soared too and she was front page news once more. Her third LP was released a few months later in November and featured more grown-up fare, standards by the likes of Jacques Brel, Cole Porter and Antonio Carlos Jobim. The 16 bonus tracks round up the songs from the single and EP releases of ‘67 and early ’68 – including the massive-selling Puppet on a String and a wealth of fine Chris Andrews compositions, such as the hits You’ve Not Changed and Today.

REVIEWS

"Released in the wake of Puppet on a String, the long-player was a more mature, accomplished work, with Sandie reworking Cole Porter, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Jacques Brel, her mournful rendition of Ne Me Quitte Pas eclipsing Scott Walker’s more famous version two years later."
