In the "golden age of hardcore", Shades of Rhythm were just as comfortable headlining genre-defining raves as they were in the Top of the Pops studio. The singles included here - The Sound Of Eden, Sweet Sensation, Homicide/Exorcist and Extacy - are bona fide gems of the bygone era of a happy face, thumping bass and loving race. Disc two adds a stack of unreleased and hard-to-find tracks and promos. "Such a happy feeling."

REVIEWS

...Another home-grown dancefloor staple comes in the form of Shades Of Rhythm, the self-titled debut from a DJ/producer outfit who hailed from deepest Peterborough. Their rave anthem singles are still the obvious highlights here - The Sound Of Eden (Every Time I See Her); Extacy; and, most of all, the screeching vocal samples and breakbeats of Sweet Sensation. However, Shades Of Rhythm created a complete club album at a time (1991) when that was rare, and exhilirating bonus remixes on this ’Extacy Edition’ reissue come from UK heroes including X-Press 2 and Joey Negro. This being the ZTT label, even the pink and purple artwork is memorably iconic.

Another killer reissue from the vaults of ZTT, sure to please even the most hardened dance/club fan.  Right around the late 80’s and early ‘90’s, the dance, club, warehouse rave scene exploded in London.  I was there, living near King’s Cross for a spell in 1989, and it was impossible not to get caught up in the frenzy created by some of these dynamite dance-music collectives like Soul II Soul.  Shades of Rhythm jumped into that fray releasing platter after platter of rave-inducing, dancefloor madness.  Hyperkinetic rhythms, inspired piano, and a generous helping of joy fueled Shades’ rise up the charts.  Here, you’ll relive those heady days when a happy face, a thumping bass really were the sign of a loving race.  “Sweet Sensation is here as are some true dance, proto-lounge masterpieces like “Shakers,” and “Lonely Days, Lonely Nights.”  If you’re a dance fan, this two-disc deluxe edition is sure to put a smile on your face.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT

There was a dizzying time during the golden age of hardcore when these rave pioneers seemed to perform in Ireland every other weekend. On the eve of its 20th anniversary, this era-defining ZTT album is reissued with a collector’s dream of a bonus CD with 16 rarities and remixes. But it’s the remastered album’s seismic singles Sweet Sensation, Extacy and The Sound of Eden that make this an essential purchase.
